Summer is well underway, and the sporting calendar is just starting to heat up. Three months of drama on the respective courts, fields and tracks are all ahead of us. Wimbledon never fails to disappoint, and we’re sure that the results of the quadrennial Football World Cup will provide some scintillating viewing.

This summer make sure that your sporting event wardrobe has everything you need, so that your style will match the drama unfolding in front of you. From Russia to Edgbaston there’s a way to dress correctly for each event you attend.

Get it right this summer.

Football

What, when and where: Football World Cup Finals, 15th July, Russia

Better known for their brawling, drinking, and creative uses of the English flag; football fans are not traditionally recognised for their fashionable attire. However, as the World Cup is being held in Moscow this year, a city famous for its glamour, its wealthy international inhabitants, and their penchant for high-end fashion, it could be the year to remake football fashion.

Aim for a relaxed look. A tailored sweater with fitted jeans and trainers is ideal. This Lightweight Marl sweater from Barbour over a t-shirt would look great with a pair of straight legged jeans and this black pair of Adidas Gazelle’s.

Finish the whole outfit off with a pair of low key Superdry KOBE shades. Showing a little support for a home grown brand might bring us a little good luck on the field. 52 years is a long enough wait.

Cricket

What, when and where: England V India Test series, 1st – 5th August, Edgbaston

Played by the British since the 18th century, cricket is part of the fabric of our sporting identity. The test series isn’t quite the Ashes when it comes to the crème de la crème of the cricketing calendar, therefore we suggest a more relaxed attire rather than your linen summer suit or chino/blazer combo.

A collared Polo Shirt in a clean pale colour, like this white Ralph Lauren polo, paired with dark tailored chinos will give a suitably smart casual look. Then team these up with a pair of these woven slip on sneakers from Russell and Bromley. Finally, to add an extra fierce edge we suggest a pair of Garret Leight Clubmaster’s.

Golf

What, when and where: The Open, 19th – 22nd July, Carnoustie

It’s no secret that you can’t step out to play a round yourself unless suitably attired. The green commands some fashion respect, and so it must be given. Jeans and trainers are out, tailored shorts or trousers are in.

A classic pair of deck shoes like these Timberland’s, and a sensible polo shirt will work great together. It’s always recommended to bring a light sweater with you too; it can get chilly out there on the green. This one from Ralph Lauren ticks all the right boxes.

If you’re lucky though, and the great English summer graces you with her presence, then these polarized Ray Ban Wayfarer’s will let you watch the game without having to fight against the glare.

Tennis

What, when and where: Wimbledon, 2nd – 15th July, Wimbledon

Wimbledon is the peak of the tennis calendar and draws some of the biggest names; both to play and to watch. If you go to Wimbledon make sure you give the occasion the respect it deserves. Look to wear a tailored blazer in a dark or navy shade, like this one from Hugo Boss, and pair this with paler coloured chinos to give that air of British elegance. These from Ralph Lauren are the perfect length and cut.

Very much a gentleman’s look, garish frames or mirrored lenses are firmly out. Instead you should pair this look with some solid full rimmed Persol shades in Tortoise, or add a touch of character with the Clubmaster Fleck by Ray Ban.

Racing

What, when and where: British Grand Prix, 8th July, Silverstone

Photo by Alex Holyoake on Unsplash

Drawing in a slightly edgier crowd, the dress code for the Grand Prix doesn’t follow the same regimen as many other more established British sports. For this event feel free to wear a more casual leather jacket and boots. For inspiration check out this leather jacket from Allsaints, and these chelsea boots from Russell and Bromley.

Alternatively, if it’s warmer (as hopefully it will be in mid-July) then you can consider well-fitted jeans and a light v-neck. Something simple and clean like this piece from Abercrombie achieves a modern “no fuss” aesthetic.

To finish the image we recommend looking at either aviators, like this pair by Tom Ford, or a slightly more squared style like these designed by Carrera.
