The royal wedding: a matter of style

The most anticipated event of the year went down without a hitch on Saturday, and Harry and Meghan are now the happily married Duke and Duchess of Sussex and are probably basking in their newly wedded bliss. It’s great, we’re happy for them; the church looked wonderful, he was handsome, and her dress was legendary. More importantly though, the guests were decked out in some of the hottest styles we’ve seen all year and we cannot wait to dissect them and see what makes them work! Not to mention how to emulate some of the best looks there for a fraction of the cost.

We’ve got our two top style guru’s from SmartBuyGlasses here to give a run down on the three best outfits from the day and the amazing designers that created them.

Victoria Beckham, Victoria Beckham

Emily: I think if we’re going to discuss a royal wedding, we need to start by mentioning the OTHER set of British royalty; The Beckhams. How fab did they look?!

Kholi: Couldn’t agree more Em! Victoria looked totally stunning in a dress of her own design. Elegant and classic, with those red heels giving a real pop of colour. The hemline length is so key here to holding the whole look together. By wearing the hemline ‘tea length’ she can take the dress from upscale day event right through to the evening. It was the perfect dress to attend a royal wedding.

Emily: Only thing I will say is that (if it was me) I would have gone with a pair of shades too. It was sunny (so, totally acceptable), and it gives you that little touch of anonymity when there are millions of cameras around. Otherwise I agree; flawless outfit. Navy is so versatile I love it! You can wear it in any season.

Emily: Plus, whilst she did look amazing, we can’t all have the wallet of a fashion designer and pro-footballer, power combo. That’s why we’ve put together a more affordable version of her elegant look that you can wear to any upcoming weddings you have this summer.

If you’re a fan of VB shades buy a pair here to go with any of your summer wedding outfits. These aviators are perfect for any occasion.

Dior Homme, David Beckham

Kholi: Speaking of how fabulous Victoria looked, you can’t go forgetting about her hubby. As far as I’m concerned, David stole the show. You have to credit this amazing look with the arrival of Kim Jones as artistic director at Dior Homme earlier this year. He’s changed the whole feel of brand, and it’s exciting to see what will be coming next!

Emily: And can I just say… sunglasses!

Kholi: You’re right! Those shades he’s wearing top the whole look perfectly. Half rimmed tortoiseshell is so hot right now! They look like they could be Oliver Peoples? Although we know he’s also a fan of Ray Ban.

Emily: Aren’t we all! If you want to look as hot as the OTHER prince of England this summer, check out our alternate ideas on how to achieve the same suave style without the price tag (for the glasses anyway. It’s hard for us to comment on a suit). Remember, it’s all about how you wear it. The suit was undoubtedly amazing; the charcoal grey wool twill three piece sitting wonderfully against the silk satin tie, but it was the way he accessorised that really pushed this outfit over the edge.

If you want to capture the signature ‘Becks suave’ then buy a pair of shades like his now!

Stella McCartney, Amal Clooney

Kholi: Finally, we can’t finish this conversation without paying some kind of homage to the drop dead gorgeous Stella McCartney creation that Amal Clooney wore.

Emily: I was about the say the same thing! Yellow can be so unforgiving on so many skin tones (mine included, sadly), but with her dark hair and eyes it looked totally flawless. All the clean lines create such a flattering silhouette, and the matching hat added total balance to the whole ensemble. Plus, there’s something so happy about wearing bright colours to a wedding. It is a celebration after all!

Kholi: I think this outfit is going to be the one that changes the face of guest list attire this wedding season! What’s so wonderful about it is that the whole tone of the outfit is happy and celebratory, meaning that you can easily emulate the feel of it even if you don’t have the same purse size. Think happy colours in an elegant cut and a longer hemline to stop the outfit from becoming ‘gaudy’. Additionally, to add a little elegance you can never go wrong with a hat. If you can’t wear a hat to a wedding, when can you?!

If you’re thinking of buying something as elegant as Amal’s dress then team it with muted shades that don’t compete for attention, like these Tom Ford Anoushka glasses. Buy them here!

SmartBuyGlasses Fashion House, Emily and Kholi

Emily: Now comes the most exciting part Kholi. What would you have worn if you were at the royal wedding? There are so many great styles and designers to choose from it’s almost an impossible question!

Kholi: Oh! No doubt about it, I would have gone with the positive energy of Amal’s outfit and added a slight bohemian twist.

Kholi: I love the bright colours, and for sure I would add a pair of cat eye frames. They’re the shape of the summer and I would flex them anyway, anywhere. I’d buy something like these LMNT cat eye shades in red. Shop them here!

Emily: I love it! For me, the Duchess of Cambridge is my eternal style icon, so I would try to keep the positive vibes but I’d be happier in pastel colours and lots of lace.

Emily: I’m also an ‘oversized shades’ girl for life, so I would also wear these Chloe Danae shades the entire day! Buy them here!

There’s no better excuse than a wedding to flex your awesome summer style so find you dress, find your shoes, and don’t forget the power of a well chosen accessory. Buy a pair of shades that will push your outfit to the next level and make sure that you really wow this season! Dress for every wedding as if it were the royal wedding!
