Contact Lenses and Allergies

Spring is allergy season for many in the UK and that means itchy eyes and pain behind the nose. This makes seeing complicated for some. You want to be able to see but glasses put pressure on your sinuses and contact lenses added to the itchy feel. Now, with high technology contacts like Focus and AcuVue you’ll be able to keep your high-moisture contact lenses in without that itchy, dry feeling. If you are still feeling pain from the allergies in your eyes perhaps rinsing them with solution will rid your eye of pollen and dander.

One of the reasons your eyes itch is simply the amount of floating material in the air that adheres to the moisture of your eye, like a magnet pulling particles into your eyes. Contacts actually reduce the attraction of particles to the eye, lessening contact and itchy feelings. Staying hydrated is important, as in spring many people don’t feel as dry as they did in winter and as a result they don’t drink as many fluids. This is important for your eye health and lessening itchy feelings. You can also carry solution with you to drop in your eye, essentially flushing out any pollen or dander that may have landed there.

If you do decide to forego contacts in favor of glasses, keep in mind that the lower weight the glasses have the less pressure they will put on your sinuses. The larger the surface area of the lenses the more they will block particles in the air. Smaller lenses sometimes have the effect of tunneling pollution directly into your eye instead of deflecting it.
